Canadian police warn: Scammers impersonating Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers are using this method to perpetrate secondary scams against cryptocurrency victims.
CoinFeed reported on March 5th that, according to Decrypt, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has warned of a new wave of "funds recovery scams" targeting victims who have previously lost money in crypto fraud. Police reported a case in Nanaimo, British Columbia: a resident lost approximately $5,000 CAD in a remote stock trading recruitment scam late last year and earlier this year was scammed by someone posing as a lawyer who claimed to have found two crypto accounts linked to him and could recover approximately $60,000 CAD in profits. The promotional materials implied RCMP involvement. Police emphasized that the RCMP will not contact individuals regarding discovered crypto accounts, will not cooperate with private companies to recover funds, and will not demand payment for investigating fraud.
