CoinFeed reported on April 13 that Telegram founder Pavel Durov posted on the X platform, stating that WhatsApp's claim of "default end-to-end encryption" is a serious deception of consumers. He pointed out that approximately 95% of private messages on WhatsApp are ultimately backed up in plaintext on Apple and Google's servers without end-to-end encryption. Backup encryption is an optional feature, rarely enabled, and even less commonly using strong passwords. Even with strong passwords for backups, messages still appear in unencrypted cloud backups because over 90% of chat partners do not have the same settings. Durov also stated that Apple and Google disclose thousands of WhatsApp backup messages to third parties annually, while Telegram has never disclosed any user message content in its more than 12-year history.
