CoinFeed reported on May 31 that, according to Cambodian media KohsantepheapDaily, a Chinese man was kidnapped, extorted, and murdered in Phnom Penh. A 53-year-old Chinese man (a real estate company owner) was kidnapped from his apartment parking lot by three suspects. The suspects used the victim's phone to contact his wife (also a Chinese national), demanding a ransom of $2 million in cryptocurrency. When the wife said she couldn't pay, the suspects continued to harass her with messages. Around 9 a.m. the next morning, the suspects sent a final message saying "That's it," and then lost contact. The wife subsequently reported the incident to the police and confirmed the kidnapping through apartment surveillance footage. The suspects tortured the victim (suffocating him by gagging, stabbing him, and beating him), causing his death. They then left the body in the back seat of their car and abandoned the vehicle, along with the body, in an open area near a landfill in Ba Ko village, Dangkao district.
