Nanjing cracks China's largest gold theft case; main suspect broke off gold pieces to pay fare before being caught at border

CoinFeed June 22 news, according to the Chongzuo Border Management Detachment, Tong, the main suspect in the "5·16" massive gold theft case in Nanjing, Jiangsu, was successfully intercepted while fleeing to the China-Vietnam border. The case involved 27 kilograms of gold, worth over 27 million yuan, making it the largest gold theft case by value in China to date. Police said that after committing the crime, Tong fled south over 2,000 kilometers by ride-hailing car. Unable to pay the fare of over 7,000 yuan in cash, he even broke off half of a 50-gram gold piece to cover the fare. He was ultimately caught just 100 meters from the border. Police subsequently arrested all 11 suspects and recovered all the stolen gold.
