Oman Reportedly Proposes Toll Plan for Strait of Hormuz, Mandatory Status in Dispute
CoinFeed June 30 news, according to The New York Times, an Iranian official and four informed diplomats revealed that despite the United States' public opposition, Iran and the US ally Oman are still advancing a plan to impose fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. If implemented, the plan would mark a significant change in the transit conditions of this strategic waterway prior to the war. Oman recently submitted a formal proposal to the United States and other Western allies, outlining a plan that would require shipping companies to pay a service fee for using the strait. US negotiators have received Oman's proposal, expressed doubts, and plan to discuss it with Omani officials. Oman's proposal is partly modeled on the operations of the Strait of Malacca and the Singapore Strait; in this Asian waterway, a private foundation collects voluntary contributions to ensure navigational safety. The diplomats said that any fees for the Strait of Hormuz would be voluntary.
