Brazil's Central Bank New Regulation: Crypto Companies and Securities Brokerages Face Same Regulatory Standards
CoinFeed July 3 news, according to Bitcoin.com, Brazil's Central Bank passed Resolution No. 580/2026, classifying virtual asset service providers as Type 3 institutions, along with securities brokerage firms, securities distribution companies, and foreign exchange brokerage firms. This means that from January 1, 2027, crypto companies will be subject to the same prudential requirements as the above-mentioned traditional financial institutions, including risk management rules, capital requirements, and information disclosure policies. The Central Bank of Brazil stated that this move is based on the international principle of 'same activity, same risk, same regulation', because virtual asset service providers have functional similarities with securities brokerage firms in business models. Additionally, according to the resolution, virtual asset service providers, regardless of size, will be included as Type 4 institutions by June 30, 2028, and will not benefit from the simplified compliance treatment for Type 5 low-risk institutions.
