Micron Launches $9 Billion Chip Expansion Project in Japan

CoinFeed July 4 news, according to Bloomberg, Micron Technology held a groundbreaking ceremony for the factory expansion project in Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan on Saturday. The total investment for this expansion is about 1.5 trillion yen, equivalent to 9.3 billion US dollars, with production lines focusing on mass production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) advanced storage chips adapted for AI computing scenarios. The plan shows that the new production line will start chip shipments as early as summer 2028. To support the local semiconductor industry and improve the chip supply chain, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry provides up to 500 billion yen in financial subsidies for this project. This large-scale expansion is seen as a key move by Japan to increase its involvement in the global AI chip competition and strengthen its local advanced storage manufacturing capabilities.
