Micron Technology invests $9.3 billion to expand advanced memory chip project, expects to ship HBM in the second half of 2028
CoinFeed July 5 news, according to Cailian Press, Micron Technology officially broke ground on Saturday local time (July 4) on the expansion of its plant in Hiroshima, western Japan. The project, with a total investment of 1.5 trillion yen (about $9.3 billion), aims to produce advanced memory chips including high bandwidth memory (HBM) to meet the strong demand driven by the artificial intelligence boom. HBM is a key component of Nvidia's AI processors, and the plant is expected to start shipping around the summer of 2028. Recently, Micron, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have each announced plans to expand manufacturing capacity. Earlier this week, SK Hynix announced plans to invest 80 trillion won (about $51.46 billion) to build a new NAND flash memory chip factory in Cheongju, the capital of North Chungcheong Province, South Korea.
